Sometimes the simplest meals are the most satisfying—and nutritious.
Welcome to BMS Meal Rating #003, where I take real meals that I actually prepare and eat and look at them through the lens of balanced, sustainable nutrition.
And this one set a new record:
🏆 BMS MEAL RATING: 9.8/10
The highest BMS Meal Rating so far!
The beauty of this meal wasn’t fancy ingredients or complicated preparation. It was a hearty, comforting combination of leftovers that I intentionally leveled up for brunch.
What’s in the Meal?
The centerpiece was a large, crispy air-fried ground turkey meatball made with sautéed bell peppers and onions, small pieces of pepper jack cheese, egg, a little Parmesan breadcrumbs and Wondra flour.
But here’s one of my favorite twists: I smashed black beans and garbanzo beans and incorporated them directly into the ground turkey mixture.
The beans weren’t there just for added nutrition. They also served as a nutritious binder, working alongside the egg, small amount of breadcrumbs and Wondra to help those substantial meatballs hold together.
The result?
Crispy outside. Moist and hearty inside. And absolutely delicious.
The meatball received a light garlic-butter, lemon and rosemary baste for an extra pop of flavor.
The rest of my brunch included:
- Black beans and garbanzos with sautéed bell peppers and onions
- Brown rice and quinoa
- Baked asparagus
- Avocado slices
- A hard-boiled egg
- Fresh raspberries
- A cup of homemade 6-bean soup with smoked turkey
Why Did This Meal Earn a 9.8?
My BMS Meal Rating isn’t based on whether a meal looks pretty or whether every ingredient is considered “perfect.”
I look at the whole meal: protein, fiber and vegetable variety, carbohydrate quality and portioning, healthy fats, nutrient density, cooking method, sodium and added sugar, portion control, sustainability—and something that matters tremendously in real life: enjoyment.
This meal delivered.
There was substantial protein, excellent fiber and plant variety, quality carbohydrates, healthy fats and an assortment of nutrient-dense whole foods.
It was also satisfying and realistic.
That’s important because a healthy eating pattern only works if you can actually live with it.
So Why Not a Perfect 10?
There was some nutritional overlap among the beans, grains and multiple protein sources, along with some additional saturated fat and sodium from ingredients such as the cheese and garlic-butter baste.
That’s a very small deduction—not a reason to eliminate foods you enjoy.
Healthy eating doesn’t require perfection. It requires consistency, balance and intentional choices over time.
And that is exactly why this meal earned a winning 9.8/10.
The Bigger BMS Message: You Can’t Out-Train Your Nutrition
Exercise is tremendously important, but reaching and maintaining our fitness goals requires more than workouts.
Our nutrition has to support the work we’re asking our bodies to do.
That doesn’t mean eating perfectly every day. It means developing eating habits that consistently provide the protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals our bodies need.
I often describe it simply:
Food is fuel. Food is nourishment. Food can be medicine.
And yes—food should also taste GOOD!
This meal checked all of those boxes.
